LENT REFLECTION - DAY 11

And no creature is hidden from his sight, but all are naked and exposed to the eyes of him to whom we must give account.

Hebrews 4:13

Dogs are great watchers of people. Teddy has lived with us for about two years, and I recognise him watching me and working out what I am about to do. Am I in for the day with him, am I taking him for a walk or am I off out. He watches and works it out and either positions himself by the door so I can't forget a fuss and a goodbye, readies himself to go out or finds somewhere to chill. After two years Teddy has the measure of me. In our lives it is likely that we have people or pets that have our measure. Friends and family who know us well and can predict our response in different situations.

Unless we have something to hide, generally if feels good to be known, to have connection with others. However, unless we truly trust God the Father, Son and Holy Spirit it can be uncomfortable to know we are fully known by our Creator God who is omniscient, having complete knowledge, knowing us better than we even know ourselves.

'Before a word is on my tongue you, LORD, know it completely.'

Psalm 139:4

However, we don't have to fear God's complete knowledge of us, because God is not only omniscient, and omnipotent (all powerful) but also perfect goodness. God is the One who knowingly and lovingly directs us to fullness of life in Jesus Christ whilst still giving us free will.

The LORD appeared to us in the past, saying "I have loved you with an everlasting love; I have drawn you with unfailing kindness."

Jeremiah 31:3

In a quick survey of just one chapter of Scripture, such as Mark 9, we see many examples of the humanity of Jesus' disciples. Recognising that just like us they question (v.10), lack understanding (v.32), show doubt and fear (v.32), and even compete to be the greatest (v. 33-37). God knows them, and God knows us fully yet loves us unreservedly. How wonderful! As we step into the flow of the day ahead, let us enjoy being known, understood and loved unreservedly.

Beloved, let us love one another, for love is from God, and whoever loves has been born of God and knows God.

1 John 4:7

Father God, we thank-you that you know us completely and your heart is one of perfect goodness towards us. Help us to understand and experience Your love a little more each day and to trust You by sharing our lives with You. Help us not to misunderstand, doubt or fear your love, or think of it as limited and something we have to compete for. Let us find awe and wonder in this day and Your amazing love. May we share it as best we can that Your love will be experienced by others. Amen.
