5: 1-2 Watch what God does, and then you do it, like children who learn proper behaviour from their parents. Mostly what God does is love you. Keep company with him and learn a life of love. Observe how Christ loved us. His love was not cautious but extravagant. He didn't love in order to get something from us but to give everything of himself to us. Love like that. What amazing words to start the day with 'mostly what God does is love you.' I am hoping that we can take hold of this extravagant, generous, unconditional love as individuals and as a community. If we can it will transform us and this love will cause us to see the world and interact with it differently. In particular Paul teaches us that living differently will cause us to avoid behaviours that corrupt us and devalue others. In the Message translation these are described as: sexual promiscuity, filthy practices, bullying greed, gossip and dirty or silly talk. Instead he says our language is one of thankfulness and truth that lights up our way. He encourages us to 'figure out what will please christ, and then do it' (Ephesians 5: 8-10).
Establishing healthy behaviours and setting boundaries can feel difficult and counter our culture where often anything goes. But Jesus doesn't expect us to make good choices on our own. Jesus has sent forth his precious Holy Spirit, the helper, our advocate, counsellor, who empowers and guides. Why not take a few minutes to ask Holy Spirit today for some help in resetting some behaviours or boundaries in your life at home, or work or another part of your life. Don't try fix everything, all at once, just one thing or follow a specific conviction of Holy Spirit. And then trust for the Spirit's help day by day.
Lent Prayer
Father God, we thank-You that what You mostly do is love us, each one of us. Not one of us is beyond Your love. Help us to open our hearts to receive Your love today. We declare our need of Your love and Spirit. May Your Spirit help us to reset any unhealthy behaviours and boundaries. We welcome Your Spirit the advocate, our counsellor, empowerer and guide. Amen.
